Despite her fearsome reputation (according to Bob), Penelope spent most of the expedition expertly supervising the excavation, sniffing for clues, and ensuring the shovel operator stayed on task. Any passing squirrels wisely kept their distance… or maybe they just weren’t interested.

For Treasure Coin #164, Bob received a photo—a memorial bench overlooking a lake somewhere in CT—and two riddles. Just enough information to spark curiosity and the will to find something cool while out exploring. So, both Bob and his trusty sidekick-Penelope, who was clearly the brains behind the operation… or at least that’s the story she’s sticking with. 😂 Together, they began unraveling the mystery.

The first riddle whispered:

“Long before roads and summer skies, this ancient lake held hidden ties. Its name means ‘divided’—so legends say, a place where history still lingers today…”

Piece by piece, Bob connected the clues until they led him to Lake Pocotopaug in CT—a beautiful historic lake whose Native American name is commonly interpreted as “divided” or “broken pond.”

Then came the second riddle:

“The lake has led you where memories rest, a memorial bench will pass the test… Where concrete meets earth is where secrets lie…”

Suddenly, everything clicked. The tiny photo matched the memorial bench overlooking the lake. Bob carefully searched the area while Penelope conducted her official “sniff inspection” of the surroundings. With a little digging where the concrete met the earth… Success! Treasure Coin #164 had been found!

As expected, Penelope immediately assumed full credit for the discovery, while Bob graciously accepted his role as the shovel operator.

One of my favorite parts about this is that it isn’t just about finding a hidden coin—it’s about discovering places and stories you may have never explored otherwise.

Lake Pocotopaug is one of Connecticut’s largest inland lakes, spanning nearly 500 acres, and has served as a gathering place for generations. From its Native American roots to today’s boating, fishing, and lakesfront community, it’s a place rich with history and local pride. The surrounding town of East Hampton, proudly known as “Belltown USA,” earned its nickname through its historic bell manufacturing industry, producing bells that once rang in schools, churches, ships, and town halls across America.

Sometimes it’s the history you uncover along the way. This is exactly what these treasure hunts are all about—exploring hidden corners of our communities, learning a little history, sharing a few laughs, and creating memories that last long after the coin has been found.
